I am a lover of storytelling
I started writing poetry in middle school and my love for stories led me to win Honorable Mentions at the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards, perform at open mics, and deliver sermons at my church.
When I graduated college, I knew I wanted to continue creative writing and found myself as a journalist intern at EBONY Magazine before transitioning into a fellowship program at VICE Media called the 2030 Project which focused on the future of various aspects of our lives as a society: identity, religion, food, fashion, and community. While at VICE, I wrote for Refinery29 for the Beauty, Entertainment, and Unbothered (R29’s Black women’s vertical) teams.
I started law school in 2021 and went through an intense identity crisis as I questioned whether I could still call myself a writer after putting my blog on ice, not going to open mic performances, and not writing the poetry that I used to. This wrestling led me to question how I could balance these two sides of myself: the creative and the law student.
After attending the National Black Law Student Association Pre-Law Convention (NBLSA) in 2024, I realized after watching Eni Popoola talk about her blog that I was in the best position to revamp my creative side. I’m excited to share my experiences as a law student in hopes that other young, Black, law students can gain perspective, encouragement, and hope, and also bring me back to myself.
